How to get your business mentioned in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers

By Coresight Creative5 min read

If you want to get your business mentioned in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers, the good news is that there is no secret trick to learn. These tools recommend businesses they can find, understand and trust. The work involved is mostly the same careful, practical SEO that has always helped local businesses, with a few extra habits that make your information easier for AI to read and repeat.

This guide walks through those habits in the order we would tackle them for a small business.

How AI answers are put together

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview for a recommendation, the system pulls together information from across the web. That can include your website, your Google Business Profile, review sites, directories, local news and social media. It then writes a summary that tries to answer the question directly.

You cannot pay to appear in these answers, and you cannot control exactly what they say. What you can do is make sure the information about your business is clear, consistent and easy to find wherever these systems look.

Step 1: Say exactly what you do, in plain words

AI systems are good at matching specific questions to specific answers. A vague homepage headline such as "Quality you can trust" gives them nothing to match.

Compare these two openings for a garage:

  • "Welcome to our garage. We pride ourselves on excellent service."
  • "Independent garage in Stockport offering MOTs, servicing, clutch and brake repairs for all makes, including hybrids. Open Saturdays."

The second tells a person and an AI exactly who you help, where and with what. Do this for your homepage and give each main service its own page with a clear heading.

Step 2: Answer real questions on your website

People ask AI tools full questions. Make it easy for those tools to find your answers.

Add a questions section to your key pages, using the words customers actually use. A takeaway might answer "Do you deliver to Didsbury?" and "Which dishes are gluten free?". A builder might answer "How long does a single-storey extension take?" and "Do you handle planning permission?".

Keep each answer short and direct. Start with the answer, then give the detail.

Step 3: Keep your details identical everywhere

Your business name, address, phone number and opening hours should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page, Yell, Checkatrade or any other directory you appear on. If one listing says "Smith & Sons Building" and another says "Smith Builders Ltd" at an old address, AI systems can struggle to tell whether they are the same business.

Make a simple list of every place your business appears online and work through it. Close or update listings you no longer use.

Step 4: Build up genuine reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local recommendations. Specific reviews help most, because they give AI systems detail to repeat. "Replaced our cracked ridge tiles the day after the storm and sent photos of the work" says much more than five stars and "brilliant".

Ask every satisfied customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review. Never buy reviews or write them yourself. Platforms remove them, and it can damage your listing.

Step 5: Add structured data to your site

Structured data is a small piece of code on your website that describes your business in a format machines read easily. It can state your business type, address, opening hours, services and the area you cover. Visitors never see it, but search engines and AI systems use it to understand your pages.

Most modern website platforms support it. If you are not sure whether your site has it, a web developer can check in a few minutes.

Step 6: Get mentioned in other places

AI tools pay attention to what other sources say about you. Local news coverage, a feature on a supplier's website, a listing in a trade association directory or a mention in a community group roundup all help build a picture of a real, active business.

Focus on places that are genuinely relevant to your area or trade. One mention on a respected local site is worth more than dozens of low-quality directory links.

Step 7: Keep things current

Out-of-date information is a common reason AI answers get businesses wrong. Old prices, closed branches and last year's opening hours can all be repeated back to customers.

Set a reminder every few months to check your website, Google Business Profile and main listings. Post updates and new photos regularly so it is clear you are still trading.

Check how you appear

Every so often, ask ChatGPT and Google the kind of questions your customers would ask. "Best independent garage in Stockport for a hybrid service" or "Builders in Bristol who do loft conversions". Note whether you appear, what is said about you, and which competitors come up. Treat it as a rough guide, because answers vary from one search to the next, but patterns over time are useful.

The honest summary

There is no switch that puts your business into AI answers. Clear words, consistent details, real reviews and steady upkeep make it much more likely. These are the same things that win customers who never use AI at all.

If you would like help with this, our SEO and AI search service is built around it. We can check how your business currently appears in Google and in AI answers, and give you a clear list of what to improve first.
